Who was John the Baptist?
John the Baptist was the son of Zacharias and Elizabeth, who were godly, devout Jews. He lived and ministered during the time of Jesus.
Character & Role
John the Baptist was chosen by God to be the forerunner of Jesus. His role was to prepare the hearts and minds of the people for the public ministry of Jesus. He did this by preaching repentance, calling out hypocrisy, and proclaiming Jesus. John’s significant characteristics are outlined here:
1. Set Apart
The calling as the forerunner of Jesus was no small responsibility. Through his secluded lifestyle in the wilderness, John the Baptist made a deliberate choice to detach himself from material comforts of society in order to prepare for his prophetic calling. This seclusion gave him plenty of time to seek God and receive guidance from Him.
2. Bold & Uncompromising
John’s message was clear and direct. He didn’t mince words in his teachings but spoke plainly about the need for repentance and the imminent arrival of the Messiah. Nor did he hesitate to confront religious leaders and hypocrites who came to him for baptism. He rebuked them for their outward godliness without the true inner transformation.
3. Humility & Respect
John was becoming quite popular in his ministry. As he preached many people repented and came to him for baptism. However, this did not blind him to the greatness of Jesus. He proclaimed that Jesus was mightier than himself (John 1:27), and clearly stated that he himself was not the Christ (John 1:20). John was hesitant to baptize Jesus, saying that he needed to be baptized by Jesus, but later complied on Jesus’ insistence to fulfill God’s plan (Matthew 3:13-15). Throughout his ministry, John directed the people to Jesus. He referred to Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world and encouraged his own disciples to follow Jesus (John 1:29-37). John is also known for his famous declaration about Jesus, “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30), which clearly indicates his recognition and acceptance of Jesus as God and Messiah.
4. Doubt & Confusion
John, despite his role as the forerunner to the Messiah, found himself going through doubt and confusion about Jesus’ identity, later on in his life, when he was imprisoned by King Herod Antipas. “Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples and said to him, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?’ And Jesus answered them, ‘Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.'” (Matthew 11:2-6) Jesus graciously confirmed his identity as Messiah, giving John the reassurance he was looking for. This episode portrays John as a human figure susceptible to moments of doubt, despite his significant role in preparing the way for Jesus.
5. Martyr for Truth
John the Baptist met an unfortunate end when he was imprisoned by King Herod Antipas for denouncing his unlawful marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife. Herodias’s daughter, Salome, requested John’s head on a platter, and Herod reluctantly granted her request, leading to John’s execution. John’s martyrdom resulted from his refusal to compromise his message of truth or remain silent in the face of opposition.
In essence, John the Baptist’s life serves as an example of dedication, courage, humility, and unwavering commitment to God’s purposes. His legacy inspires us to live lives of faithfulness, integrity, and boldness in proclaiming the Gospel message.
