Who was Thomas the Apostle?

Thomas, also called Didymus (meaning “twin”), was one of the twelve disciples of Jesus. While the Gospels don’t detail his specific calling, he is listed among the apostles in Matthew 10:3, Mark 3:18, and Luke 6:15. He became known for his initial doubt of the resurrection, earning the nickname “Doubting Thomas.” According to church tradition, Thomas is recognized for bringing the Gospel to India.

Significant Characteristics

Devoted: As Jesus heads back to Judea (a place controlled by the people who wanted to kill Him) to raise Lazarus from the dead, Thomas seems convinced that something bad was going to happen to Him. In spite of that, he followed Jesus to Judea and and was ready to die with him. He told his fellow disciples, “Let us go also and die with him.” (John 11:6)

Inquisitive & Boldness: Thomas was not afraid to ask questions and seek clarification when he needed to understand Jesus’ teachings. (John 14:6)

Skepticism & Unbelief: When Jesus appeared to the other disciples after His resurrection, Thomas was not present. When he was told about this, he refused to believe, making his famous statement of unbelief, “Unless I see the nail marks in His hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe” (John 20:25). This incident earned him the nickname “Doubting Thomas.”

Conviction & Faith: When Jesus later appeared to Thomas and invited him to touch His wounds, Thomas responded with faith: “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28). His skepticism had transformed into deep faith, showing the power of having a personal encounter with Jesus. This incident also led Jesus to make the profound statement, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (John 20:29)

Contributions to the Church

Missionary Work: According to church history, after Pentecost, Thomas travelled beyond the Roman Empire to spread the Gospel. He is credited with preaching in regions that included Parthia (modern-day Iran), Persia, and eventually India. His missionary journey is particularly associated with India, where he established several Christian communities and churches. He is a revered figure in Indian Christianity.

Martydom

Thomas met his martyrdom in India, where tradition holds that he was killed by spearing. His death was a result of his bold proclamation of the Gospel, refusing to renounce his faith in Christ despite opposition.

Testimony & Legacy

Thomas is a testimony of one who moved from doubt to faith, and a life and mission that demonstrated his zeal and conviction in the life and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
