The land of Jesus’ birth holds profound significance for billions of people worldwide. Situated in the middle east, this region encompasses modern-day Israel and Palestine. 1. Historical Context
The region of Israel is deeply rooted in history with civilizations dating thousand of years back. Israel started out as a united kingdom, first went through internal division before it was ruled by various kingdoms, spanning from the Assyrians and Babylonians to Roman dominion, with numerous dynasties ruling throughout this period. 2. Geographical Context
Israel is a country located in the Middle East, strategically at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa serving as a bridge between these continents. During the time of Jesus it was bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the west, the Jordan River and Dead Sea to the east, Lebanon to the north, and Egypt to the southwest.
Israel’s landscape is diverse, featuring coastal plains along the Mediterranean coast, mountain ranges running through the center, and the Jordan Valley along the eastern border. The northern part of the country is characterized by the Galilee region, which is mountainous and green, while the southern part is more arid, with the Judean Desert and the Negev Desert.
Israel during Jesus’ time was much smaller than current day Israel. It would take a few days to travel from one end of the country to the other on foot or by donkey. 3. Political Context
Israel was a Roman province under Roman rule, during the time of Jesus. This period was characterized by unfair taxations, marked economic differences between the rich and poor, social tension with periodic Jewish rebellion, and harsh measures including crucifixion taken by the Romans to combat the rebellion. All this set the stage for the coming of the Messiah as many Jews longed to be delivered from the Roman rule and become a free nation. To know more, click here.
4. Religious Context
During the time of Jesus, the religious environment in Israel was shaped by several significant factors. Judaism was the dominant religion with religious practices that included temple worship, synagogue gatherings and adherence to Mosaic Law. Several sects existed within Judaism with their own beliefs and practices. Israel was under Roman rule, and the Jews’ monotheistic beliefs often conflicted with the Roman polytheistic practices causing ongoing tension.
