Who was Joseph?
Introduction
Joseph was a Jewish carpenter from Nazareth who lived in the first century. He was engaged to be married to Mary.
Character & Role
God chose Joseph to be the earthly father of Jesus. Joseph’s significant characteristics and role in Mary & Jesus’ life are outlined here:
1. Man of Integrity
In Matthew 1:19 Joseph is described as a “righteous” or “just” man indicating his strong moral character and adherence to Jewish law.
2. Compassion & Understanding
Joseph exhibited compassion when he decided to put Mary away quietly after learning of her unwed pregnancy, to save her from public disgrace. He was considerate towards her, despite his feelings of disappointment and distress.
3. Faith & Obedience
Joseph displayed great faith and obedience to God’s plan by accepting Mary and the unborn Jesus immediately after the angel’s message in a dream. (Matthew 1:20-24)
4. Trusted Ambassador
God orchestrated key events in the early life of Jesus through Joseph. The “Flight to Egypt” (Matthew 2:13-15) and the “Return to Nazareth” (Matthew 2:19-23) were both time sensitive events in Jesus’ early life. Joseph was quick to hear, and quick to take action in both instances.
5. Quiet Supporter
Joseph took Mary as his wife soon after the angel’s message, and provided her with support through her pregnancy. He was by her side in the manger helping care for the newborn Jesus and greet the numerous visitors who came to witness the miracle. He ensured the safety and well being of his young family in their many travels – out of Bethlehem to Egypt – from Egypt to Nazareth.
6. Family Provider
Joseph was a carpenter by trade and he would be responsible for the economic well being of his family. His trade would have been essential for providing for Mary and Jesus’ daily needs.
7. Spiritual Leadership
Joseph provided spiritual leadership for his family by adhering to Jewish customs and laws. This is evident in the circumcision of Jesus (Luke 2:21), the presentation of Jesus in the temple (Luke 2:22-24), and the family’s annual pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the Passover festival (Luke 2:41). These acts demonstrate Joseph’s commitment to ensuring that Jesus was raised in the Jewish faith.
