Geography of Israel

During the time of Jesus, the geography of Israel was distinctively divided into several key regions, each with its own significant cities and characteristics:

1. Galilee

Located in the north, Galilee was known for its lush landscapes, agriculture, and fishing industry, thanks to the Sea of Galilee (also known as Lake Tiberias or Lake Kinneret). Notable cities included:

a. Nazareth: Jesus’ hometown, a small village nestled in the hills of Galilee.
b. Capernaum: Situated on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee, it became a central location in Jesus’ ministry.
c. Cana: Located near Nazareth, this town is best known as the site where Jesus performed his first miracle.

2. Samaria

South of Galilee, Samaria was a region often avoided by Jews due to deep-seated historical and religious animosities between Jews and Samaritans. Significant locations included:
Sychar (Shechem): This site is well known as the place where Jesus spoke to the Samaritan woman.

3. Judea

This southern region of Israel was more arid and mountainous. It housed some of the most significant cities:

a. Jerusalem: This was the site of the Jewish Temple, and the religious and cultural heart of Jewish life. Central events in Jesus’ life like the Crucifixion and Resurrection happened in Jerusalem.
b. Bethlehem: Known as the birthplace of Jesus, and located near Jerusalem.
c. Bethany: A village close to Jerusalem, known for being the home of Lazarus, whom Jesus raised from the dead.
d. Jericho: An ancient city near the Jordan river, known for its walls and the story of Jesus healing blind Bartimaeus.

4. Decapolis

A group of ten cities on the eastern frontier of the Roman Empire in Judea and Syria. Jesus visited this area, and it’s mentioned in the Gospels.

5. Perea

This area east of the Jordan river is mentioned in the context of Jesus’ travels and teachings.

6. Wilderness of Judea

A desert area lying east of Jerusalem and extending to the Dead Sea. John the Baptist conducted his ministry in this wilderness. Jesus also spent 40 days fasting and being tempted in this wilderness.
