Christmas – A Season of Hope
Christmas – A Season of Hope
Isaiah 9:6 proclaims, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Isaiah delivered this promise over Israel at a time when they experienced fear, powerlessness and a lack of trust in God, being surrounded by hostile powers. Isaiah’s words promised a future Messiah who would fulfill their deepest hopes and comfort them in their struggles.
Let us explore the different characteristics of the Messiah within this prophecy:
“For to us a Child is born” reveals the human side of Jesus, since He came into this world as a baby. While on earth, Jesus experienced human emotions and temptations, but yet did not sin (Hebrews 4:15). Because of this, Jesus understands our weaknesses very well.
“To us a Son is given” This shows the deity of Christ, as one that was given, indicating that He existed before he came to earth. The Son was given for the redemption of the world (John 3:16).
“The government shall be upon his shoulders” looks beyond the time of Christ’s birth, death, resurrection and His Second Coming to His future kingdom. While Christ rules in the hearts of his followers today, this prophecy speaks of a future earthly kingdom ruled by Christ himself with perfect justice.
As “Wonderful Counselor”, Jesus carries divine wisdom. A good counselor is characterized by wisdom, knowledge and understanding. Colossians 2:3 tells us that “all treasures of wisdom and knowledge” are hidden in Christ. His teaching amazed people because He spoke as one with authority (Mark 1:22).
“Mighty God” reveals Christ’s divine power and authority. Jesus has demonstrated his power in many ways – by his ability to forgive sins, in commanding nature to obey him, healing sickness and disease, defeating Satan and the powers of darkness.
“Eternal Father” or the “Father of Eternity” refers to Christ’s role in establishing eternal life through his resurrection, for many to follow.
As “Prince of Peace”, Jesus brings true peace – both in the future kingdom and in our hearts today. As we invite Jesus into our life, allowing him to take control, “His peace will guard our hearts and minds” (Philippians 4:7)
Today, we see this prophecy fulfilled in the birth of Jesus. Whether we face uncertainty, fear, or challenges, Christmas points us to the One who gives hope for our situations. As Psalm 34:8 invites us, “Taste and see that the Lord is good”, when we welcome Jesus into our lives, He not only brings hope but also transformation into our circumstances.
