Christmas – A Season of God with Us
Christmas – A Season of God with Us
Matthew 1:23 proclaims, “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us)
This declaration appears as part of the Christmas story as related in Matthew’s Gospel. The angel delivers a message to Joseph, explaining the miraculous nature of Mary’s pregnancy and the divine purpose of the child she carries. This was more than a birth announcement – it was a revelation that God Himself would take human form and dwell among His people.
The name “Immanuel”, meaning “God with us,” carries deep significance. It represents a fundamental shift in the way that humanity could experience God’s presence. People now had direct access to God through Jesus. All believers can approach God, and communicate with Him personally. Designated priests and prophets are no longer needed for people to access God. Connection with God is possible anywhere, anytime and is based on grace and faith. God’s presence is no longer tied to specific locations or based on complex systems of laws and sacrifices. God’s presence dwells within believers through the Holy Spirit.
The truth of “God with us” can transform how we face daily life. In moments of loneliness, we can remember that God is ever-present and stands beside us. When facing difficult challenges, we have more than just hope – we have a friend who not only understands our struggles but also guides our steps along the way. In seasons of sorrow, Immanuel is with us, carrying our burdens, bringing us comfort and hope. In moments of triumph and joy, he is there with us as a Father who delights in celebrating with his children.
The Christmas season reminds us that God’s presence isn’t just a historical event but a continuing reality. Whether we’re dealing with family stress, work pressures, health challenges, or personal struggles, “Immanuel” means we face nothing alone. God is as present with us today as He was in that Bethlehem manger. His promise to us is, “And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20b)
